“It's like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story.” - Patrick Rothfuss

All humans are enchanted by stories. Myths are present in every aspect of recorded history. They inform our lives like nothing else. Our modern lives are defined by movies, television shows, books, podcasts, and articles. There's little we love more than a good story. Stories can bind different groups of people together for better or worse. It's not a stretch to say that narratives are the single most powerful force in human history.

We create a story about each of our individual lives as we live them. This narrative in our head shapes the way we view ourselves and the way we view others. It can cause immense problems, or it can help us achieve great things. Sometimes external events cause us to alter our story, and sometimes we alter it ourselves. The content of this story is critical to our wellbeing - if our narrative encourages anxiety, we will feel anxious. If it says that there is no hope, we will likely feel depressed.

Narrative therapy, developed by Michael White and David Epston, is a major therapeutic asset when that story needs to be reshaped. At Four Stones Collaborative, we will help you identify the unique and wonderful parts of yourself in order to tell a better story - one where you have hope and meaning. We have a person-centered approach, and we believe that no matter what the reality is, you can author a new story. Think about how much fun it is to open a new book, full of possibility. That can be your life!
